🖤 Riga's Dark Secret: The Herbal Elixir That Cured an Empress

Welcome to Riga, the city where history and mystery are poured into a bottle! As your local guide, I invite you to discover the legendary drink known as Riga Black Balsam—a bitter, dark elixir with a truly magical past.

The Mysterious Pharmacist of the 18th Century

The story of the Balsam began in the distant 18th century, when a mysterious man named Abraham Kunze arrived in Riga. Nobody knew his profession, but he soon became famous for creating an exceptional "potable remedy" that quickly gained popularity in local taverns and pharmacies.
  • The Original Elixir: Interestingly, the very first Balsam was not black! It was a clear, yellowish herbal infusion. Yet, even in this original form, it was a potent mixture of numerous medicinal herbs. It is important to note that the original recipe was lost during World War II, and the Balsam we enjoy today is a reconstructed version, dating back to the end of the conflict.

The Royal Cure: A Legend Involving Catherine the Great

The Balsam’s fame exploded thanks to a legendary—and perhaps miraculous—event.
In the mid-1700s, Empress Catherine II of Russia visited Riga. During her journey, she was tormented by severe stomach pains and terrible colic. Nothing seemed to help the Empress, until she was offered Kunze’s creation.
The legend says she drank the infusion, and, lo and behold, the next morning, her suffering was gone! She felt great relief, and her recovery cemented the Balsam's reputation as a powerful medicine.

What is Black Magic? The Recipe Today

Today’s Riga Black Balsam is an extremely strong spirit, traditionally infused with 24 different herbs, roots, and spices.
Its flavor is often compared to Jägermeister, but with its own unique, complex, and intensely bittersweet profile. (Note: While some describe the original flavor as bitter, the modern version is quite balanced, especially varieties mixed with fruit juices.)

🔥 Essential Winter Warmer: The Home Recipe

To experience the true power of Balsam, try this perfect cold-weather recipe, popular in Latvia:
  1. Get Blackcurrant Juice: You can easily buy blackcurrant juice in Latvian shops and often in your home country as well.
  2. Warm It: Heat the juice on the stove—do not boil it!
  3. Mix & Serve: For one glass of the warm drink, pour in 25 milliliters (g) of Balsam (any flavour you like).
  4. Garnish: Add a slice of orange or apple and a stick of cinnamon. Drink it hot!
This warming drink is a true hit in cold weather, preparing you perfectly for the often-tough climate of the Baltics.

🛍️ Where to Find the Black Elixir

You can certainly purchase the Balsam in any major supermarket in Riga—and you'll find it cheaper there than in the Old Town souvenir shops!
However, if you truly want to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of an 18th-century apothecary, I highly recommend visiting the themed bar “Riga Black Magic.”
Located in the historic cellars of the Old Town, this establishment offers:
  • Tastings: Sample different varieties of Balsam, often paired with local chocolate and coffee.
  • Unique Desserts: Even the café's pastry chef once admitted that incorporating the strong, herbal drink into sweet recipes was a challenge. It took time, but the Balsam eventually "conquered" his recipes, resulting in truly unique treats!

Come and taste the history of Riga—just remember to sip slowly; this centuries-old secret is potent! Now that you are warm and prepared, let's go for a walk and discover the beautiful architecture the Baltics are hiding!
